They were actually not bred to be pampered, but to pamper humans…
however they do love to be pampered
Mexian royalty used them as hot water bottles- kept them warm in bed!
Ancient Mexicans used to worship the dogs. They were treated as royalty and were owned by royalty. They also used the dogs to help keep warm at night.
I would say that they are in dog shows because the American Kennel Club recognizes them as a breed of dog. The only way a type of dog can be part of a dog show is to have the AKC recognize it as a breed of dog.
The origin of the Chihuahua is difficult to trace, as their history is based on theory and folklore.
It is said that the Chihuahua, originally derived from an ancient, extinct breed, the Techichi, was developed during the Toltec period. Supposedly, the Chihuahua was involved in religion, was worshiped by the Aztecs, who believed these dogs had the “power” to lead the dead through the under world, as well as having the power to rid one’s sins during after being sacrificed.
Other theories iinclude that the Chihuahua was bred to hunt small game in packs, or they were originally used by Mexicans to keep warm. Other theories is that the breed originated in China, where these dogs were eaten, then the breed brought over to Mexico.
Today, many purebreds that were developed for very specific working purposes are pampered and used only for companionship in households all across the world, while these very same purebreds are still used for working purposes and are bred for dog shows by others.
thats not really what the were bred for.
they were bred in mexico to be pets, but also to be used as a food source.
kinda like a pet chicken or rabbit.
The Chihuahua’s history actually isn’t all that clear. They were companion but they aren’t the only breed that was bred to be more than just a pet to its owners.
If your teacher believes that dogs bred for the sole purpose of being pampered shouldn’t be in dog shows, then that would eliminate the entire toy group, which for the AKC consists of 22 breeds!
There are many breeds that were bred only to be companions/lap dogs. Their job is to provide lifelong companionship and nothing more.
They were bred to be companion dogs to humans.
