A Job and a Dog – Is this neglect? How do people manage?

I have a young adult dog who I pamper to death. I give her everything; love, attention, toys, treats, food, water, bathroom breaks. I play with her, I let her sleep with me. I walk her to the beach sometimes and let her run without her leash (as there are several other dog owners who bring their dogs to the private beach to play together on). The one thing that I do not provide enough of is long walks… I’m home for most of the day during the week, with exception of maybe 3-4 hours where I am not home. This is when my dog is kept in the house by herself. I just graduated high school and I’ve been seeking a job. Once I finally am employed, I will be working part-time. During the day when I’m working, my dog will be kept indoors by herself. My mom complains that I am neglecting my dog when I am away… But as I said, I’m only gone for about 3-4 hours (and this is without a job at the moment). Is this REALLY neglect? How do people with part-time or full-time jobs manage their dogs? My dog was crate trained as a puppy, and I was thinking of buying a new crate to keep her in while I’m at work to keep her from getting into trouble. Even though I provide plenty of love, attention, and everything she needs… (except for lots of walks), is it really neglect for keeping her in the house during the time I’m at work? She’s a young adult dog, not a puppy (as most of the stuff I found online was about puppies). Isn’t she fine the way things are? Isn’t it possible to keep her when I start working? I mean my mom is flipping out because I’m not home for 3-4 hours a day during the weekdays… That’s not much time at all. Aside from those 3-4 hours, I’m ALWAYS home with my dog… Comments please?
If I just have to walk her more in order to keep her, then so be it. I don’t even have to take her for a walk, wouldn’t a dog park be good enough? She would get plenty of exercise and would also get to socialize with other dogs, just like she does at the beach. If I do this, then do you think she will be fine? I just don’t want to neglect her when I start working at a job. My mom makes it sound like it is impossible to own a pet when you work… She doesn’t even work. She stays home all day, doing nothing productive. She could take my dog out at least to potty while I’m gone, but she says it’s my responsibility and that she will have nothing to do with the dog… Quite frankly, I think she just doesn’t like my dog. I’ve had my dog for almost 9 months now. She’s been very good, up until she chewed up some laundry in my room when I was gone. Once I get a pen in the garage to put her in while I’m gone, I think everything will be content for her. I do want whats best for her.
She is a border collie mix, I believe the other half of her is pit bull. She’s rather small for a medium sized dog.
My dad is sitting with me now suggesting that we build her a pen in the garage. I could then keep her in the pen when I am gone, and she’ll have more room to run and play when I’m gone.
It seems, from people’s comments, that the only thing I neglect to provide my dog is plenty of walks. But I always said this earlier, as I know it is the only thing I don’t do a lot of.
And thanks to everyone who has commented. My mom calls me selfish for not getting rid of my dog, but I just can’t part with her. I love her to death. She is the best companion I could ever have, and I return all the love she gives to me with treats and toys and plenty of attention when I’m at home. I really do not want to give her to a shelter (the only no-kill shelter in the area is full of homeless pets and they have no room for more). I take care of her with exception of enough exercise.
Yes she wants me to give up the dog so that it can find a “better home.” I really take excellent care of the dog, it was always my dream to have my own dog, one that would be attached to me over everyone else… That’s exactly what I got, and I love her to death. But I can’t be with her 24/7. When I start working, I’ll have to be away from the house. I’m sure my dog can manage that. Millions of people work and still have a dog that they keep at home until they get off work.

I like a dog that loves to be brushed and is a lap dog. i don;t want a dog that trys to rip up your deck or run out of your backyard. i love a dog that loves to be pampered. You know, the dogs that like to model and all, and like to be dressed and like bows in their hair!

Her name is Sassy she’s a miniature poodle who in her “heyday” weighed abt 13lbs. Now she weighs just under 10. She was spayed years agp. I’ve taken her to the Vet who tested her for many things incl. worms. I’ve tried every dogfood I can think of. I don’t know what else to do! Her teeth appear to be OK, but could use cleaning. She’s an inside pampered pooch. I love her very much, & I need advice. Any ideas?
